chinook salmon live for years in the vast openness of the pacific ocean, with all of its currents and predators and seemingly limitless expanses, only for them to fight their way up rivers and over mountains to the very stream in which they were born. scientists believe they use magnetic fields to guide them home—that each of them has a “magnetic imprint” of where home is, that they keep swimming until they’ve arrived. a chinook could swim halfway across the pacific but it still carries home with it—ferns and firs and smooth river stone all encoded into some magnetic map.
